Ashley Matthews grew up in Sanford, North Carolina. She grew up at Grace Chapel Church and accepted Christ in her heart when she was seven years old. Ashley went on her first mission trip in 2004 to Mexico when she was thirteen years old. God worked in her heart during that trip and she knew she would spend her life involved in missions. At 18 years old, Ashley surrendered her life to the Lord’s will for her and committed to learn Spanish and serve with SCORE International for one year in Costa Rica. There, she met TEAMeffort Youth Missions and was sent to Guatemala.
Ashley later attended Lee University and graduated with degrees in history and Spanish education. She spent her summers serving with TEAMeffort in Antigua, Guatemala where she had the opportunity to lead youth groups from all over the United States on the same kind of mission trips that the Lord used to grow her own faith. While the youth groups were doing construction projects in the community, Ashley fell in love with the people of San Felipe, Guatemala. “God filled my heart with a love for them that can only come from Him. It is one of the best gifts He has given me,” Ashley says.
It is a gift, but also a responsibility. God has put a dream in Ashley’s heart to serve the people of San Felipe beyond building them houses during the summer months. Her dream is coming true at Mountains of Grace.
